In any tradition of Devī worship, Saptaśatī is the most renowned scripture on Devī. The one that is not merely read but lived through.

The Devī Saptaśatī, the seven hundred verses drawn from the Mārkaṇḍeya Purāṇa, is one of those rare scriptures that begins working on the seeker while they are reciting it. Not after. Not when they have understood it intellectually. While the sounds are still in the air, when it is being held, read, or chanted. That is the power these 700 verses of Saptaśatī hold.

The Saptaśatī is divided into three Caritras, or three episodes, and each Caritra corresponds to a different aspect of Devī and a different layer of human nature. Three great narratives woven around one central truth: that the power which moves through this universe is Śakti, and that She can be approached, invoked, and known. But only through Her grace alone.

Thrown out of their own kingdom and homes by their family, they relentlessly roam without any purpose. A king and a merchant both arrive at the āśrama of Ṛṣi Medha. They both are completely grief-stricken and hopelessly traumatized.

It was not their intention to visit the Ṛṣi. It was not planned or deliberate. It was just a random coincidence, like so many others in our lives. The Ṛṣi welcomes them in silence. He doesn't preach or explain anything; he simply gives them space to be there. Much later, the Ṛṣi reveals a story to both of them.

This is how Devī Saptaśatī begins. Perhaps the only scripture that looks directly into the eyes of every seeker and shows them their weakness and vulnerabilities are. Devī Saptaśatī is a journey of every broken seeker, looking to overcome everyday obstacles and ultimately attaining the grace of Devī.
